House in Sendagaya

A House for Four Families to Live Together

This four-family house is located behind the National Noh Theatre in Sendagaya. The residents consist of the owner and his wife, his father, his sister’s family, and his daughter. Until now, each of the four generations had been living separately in their own houses, but now that the father is getting older, they wanted a house where all four households could live together.

Therefore, we planned a house that could be lived in for many generations to come. We designed a simple structure that would allow for easy planning of future interior changes. On the north side of the site, there is a park behind the National Noh Theatre across the road, and we planned the layout so that each room can enjoy the greenery of the park.

The roof of the National Noh Theatre has dry aluminum louvers, and water flows through the concrete roof beneath the aluminum louvers. This construction method has kept the roof of the National Noh Theatre in beautiful condition for many years. We have inherited this method of construction and combined it with the dry brick method and exterior insulation.
