We are pleased to announce that we will be in charge of the design of the new Imperial Theatre in Tokyo.
On January 16, a press conference was held at the current Imperial Theatre in Tokyo to announce the design of the third Imperial Theatre.
Mr. Atsuo Ikeda, Managing Executive Officer, Head of Theatrical Group of TOHO CO., LTD., the operator of the Imperial Theatre, and Tetsuo Kobori, Principal of Tetsuo Kobori Architects, presented an outline of the new Imperial Theatre, which was attended by many members of the press.

- Outline of the Imperial Theatre Rebuilding Project
The current Imperial Theatre, the second generation of the Imperial Theatre, is located near Hibiya, the birthplace of Toho Co.
The history of the Imperial Theatre, which has spanned three generations since its opening in 1911, is about to embark on a new century with a fusion of artistic and popular appeal, an enterprising spirit, and a passion for the stage that will continue to be carried on with sincerity in the future.
The new Imperial Theatre will be the flagship of Japan’s theatrical productions to be presented to the world, with the same scale of seating and stage as the current one and with the same focus on further developing the unique characteristics of the original and current Imperial Theatre, and by enhancing the lobby space and backyard, and enriching the theater’s production techniques.

- New Imperial Theatre Architectural Design Concept “THE VEIL”
The architectural concept of the new Imperial Theatre is “THE VEIL”.
Facing the Imperial Palace, the Imperial Theatre is blessed with a unique environment of sparkling water, beautiful light, and abundant greenery. We thought that an image of being clothed in and enveloped by these natural surroundings would be appropriate for the new theatre. The anticipation of the people will be at its peak as they feel the transition of nature and imagine the world beyond the veil. And the glimpse of the foyer’s glamorous scenery from the city will make the theater a stage for the city.
The continuity between the entrance, foyer, seating, and stage, with its frontality, creates a new prestige for the Imperial Theatre. The experience changes as one passes through the multiple layers of space like a veil, including the entire approach to the auditorium, creating a rich theatre experience that can only be had at this location. While developing the splendor of the Imperial Theatre, we aim to create an uplifting and comfortable space for all to enjoy as a Japanese theater that can be presented to the world. It is also “Japan unique with an eye on the future”. Based on these concepts, we are currently working on the design together with related parties. (Tetsuo Kobori)
